How To Read A CBD Last Test
You know that independent lab tests are critical to understanding the quality of the CBD product you’re considering, but learning how to read cannabis lab reports can be complicated. In this section, we’ll introduce you to the types of information CBD lab reports provide and help you get the most out of the lab tests you study.
1. Start With The Lab
There are lots of different cannabis labs out there, and they vary widely in terms of reliability and professionality. If it’s hard, or even impossible, to ascertain which lab a CBD producer used, it’s time to move on to the next company.
Being able to trace hemp lab testing back to the facility that produced it is critical for quality assurance and transparency purposes. A CBD company that doesn’t make its lab public might have something to hide. On the other hand, they might simply be too lazy to follow good practices. In either case, there are lots of fish in the sea, so you don’t have to settle for a CBD company you can’t trust.
Once you’ve found out which lab produced the CBD lab testing you’ve found online, do some digging. Is there a lot of information on the lab available? Are there any reviews on sites like Better Business Bureau or Glassdoor? Overall, how reputable and independent do you think the lab might be? Use your own discretion, and remember that CBD remains a cutthroat industry.
2. Check The Cannabinoids
One of the first things that should draw your attention when you view a CBD lab test is the concentration of total cannabinoids. In this report for our Secret Nature Forbidden Fruit vape cartridge, for instance, the total cannabinoids are listed at 63.5221% of the overall weight of the live resin extract. When you scroll up a little bit, you can see each of the cannabinoids in this cartridge listed individually.
Checking the cannabinoid concentration in your CBD products allows you to confirm that they contain less than 0.3% THC. Plus, these data also inform you about the presence of other cannabinoids. Forbidden Fruit by Secret Nature, for instance, contains nearly a half of a percent of CBDV and CBC each, and this cartridge also contains nearly 0.1% cannabigerol.
These concentrations might seem small, but keep in mind that the cannabinoids appear to interact with each other to manifest unique effects. Other trace cannabinoids that might be present in hemp extract include CBDA, CBC, and CBN. The presence of these cannabinoids varies by strain.
3. What About Terpenes?
Good CBD lab results also include information on the terpenes that are present in hemp products. CBD labs can test for terpenes just as easily as they test for cannabinoids, but many producers don’t think it’s necessary to tell their customers the exact terpene concentrations their hemp products contain.
Just as the cannabinoid balance in hemp extract can impact its overall effects, so can terpenes. When combined, cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids appear to boost each other via the entourage effect, a phenomenon that cannabis researchers theorize could explain the unique effects that different hemp strains exert.
Without understanding which terpenes go into your hemp extract, the effects of your hemp product may be unexpected. It’s also important to remember that terpenes are responsible for the incredible aromas of cannabis products, so the terpene profile in your CBD oil also affects your olfactory experience. If your CBD lab doesn’t provide terpene information, it’s time to work with a competitor instead.
4. Did They Check For Toxins?
Every once in a while, you come across a CBD lab report that’s perfect except for one glaring omission—toxin checks. If you grow your flower organically and take adequate measures to prevent contamination, then there’s no need to test for certain types of toxins.
Other types of potential contaminants, however, such as pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents, are disturbingly common in the hemp industry. It’s therefore absolutely necessary to test for these toxins, and it’s also a good idea to test for fungal and bacterial contamination.
Let’s take a look at the lab test for Secret Nature Organic Hemp Flower Nectar as an example. Scroll down to the section titled “Pesticide Test,” and look through the following testing sections as well to get a full grasp of just how much importance we place on the safety of our products.
5. Putting It All Together
If all the information we’ve listed above isn’t easy to find, then the lab report you’re reading is essentially useless. Tiny, grainy JPEG or PDF files fail to inspire consumer confidence, but the mobile-responsive, highly technical lab reports we offer at Secret Nature show that we’re ahead of the curve. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to find the information you need in our lab tests, so let’s run through the test results for Secret Nature Frosted Kush from the beginning to the end:
- At the top of each lab test, you’ll find a high-definition photograph of the product that was tested.
- Next, each Secret Nature product is tested for potency. Scroll down to view a full list of cannabinoids contained in each product with exact percentages down to the 1,000th decimal place.
- Scroll down further to see the terpene profile included in the product with exact percentages down to the 1,000th decimal place.

Informed consumers make the best decisions, which keeps the economy growing sustainably and responsibly. Let’s push the hemp industry forward by supporting brands like Secret Nature that place such a heavy emphasis on quality and dependability.
What To Look For In CBD Lab Test Results
We’ve covered the information you can expect to find in a good CBD lab test. What overall qualities should these test results have, however? We’ll go over the details in this section:
Independent
To be trustworthy, cannabis labs need to be completely independent from the products they are testing. If a lab has a reason to want a product to fail testing or succeed, that’s a potential conflict of interest. CBD labs that aren’t completely independent from bias will put anything they want in lab results to make money, which is why vetting the lab that tests your hemp products is so important.
You’ll be hard pressed to find any negative information on SC Labs on the internet. California Weed Blog even conducted a full three-hour interview with SC Labs during the 2017 clean cannabis crisis only to find this renowned cannabis testing lab to be fully on the level. These results independently confirm that SC Labs is not a testing company known for bias or conflict of interest.
Rigorous
A CBD lab test that only tells you the cannabinoid concentrations won’t be good enough. Some toxin screens aren’t necessary for certain kinds of CBD products, but every hemp lab report should indicate that at least a few categories of contaminants were tested.
Failing to include information on terpene concentrations can also be a sign that a CBD lab isn’t as rigorous as it should be. Lack of rigor when testing for terpene or trace cannabinoid concentrations isn’t that much of a red flag by itself, but it’s possible that the same irresponsibility could apply to more critical testing criteria like the presence of agricultural toxins.
Thorough
How does the lab report read overall? Is the information clean and well presented? Most importantly, does it seem like the testing lab cared how well it did? The right CBD lab will have its heart in the right place, and we’re fully convinced that SC Labs is fighting the good fight.
